Agroforestry Trainings for Natural Resource Professionals
Do you advise land managers, and have an interest in learning more about forest farming, silvopasture, or alley cropping? The increasing interest in agroforestry among land managers has produced a growing need for technical assistance. Join us to learn more about these practices to provide agroforestry technical assistance to your clients.
Agroforestry Trainings for Natural Resource Professionals (ATFNP) programming is an inter-regional collaboration that is has been led by Appalachian Sustainable Development since its inception in 2021. ATFNRP offers consistent, regionally appropriate educational opportunities to natural resource professionals who advise or assist land managers with the adoption or expansion of agroforestry practices. This program offers a series of in-person trainings combined with online courses. The online courses are all designed to be a la carte, so you can attend whichever sessions you choose. In-person trainings are offered across the United States through various partners at both the 100 & 200 educational levels. NC State University, Appalachian Sustainable Development, Virginia Tech, and collaborators are excited to invite you to this Agroforestry Training for Natural Resource Professionals one-day workshop.
Silvopasture is the intentional integration of forages, trees, and livestock, and can increase productivity and support health in farm and forest systems. The growing interest in silvopasture and other agroforestry practices among farmers, landowners, and land managers has produced a need for technical assistance.
Lyric and Noah East run Wild East Farm, a diverse silvopasture operation in the mountains of Marion, North Carolina. Join these innovative farmers, along with the NC Alternative Crops and Organics program of Jeanine Davis, Appalachian Sustainable Development’s Stesha Warren, NRCS representatives, and John Fike of Virginia Tech for this “train the trainer” workshop.
Participants will learn principles, design considerations, benefits, and potential challenges associated with silvopasture. The training includes a farm tour and instruction on forage selection and establishment, site assessment, and local and historical examples of silvopasture.
This training has been approved for the following: 6.0 NRCS CEU hours, 4.5 SAF Cat 1 credits, 6.0 Extension Professional Development Contact Hours (XLMS), Agents may receive credit towards NC Environmental Education Certification.
