Join our mission in working to build a thriving agricultural economy through economic opportunities, workforce training, and access to local healthy food for vulnerable populations
Many people within our region do not know where their next meal is coming from. ASD changes that narrative by providing food boxes that we pack and distribute every Friday from our food hub in Duffield, VA, and donate to 40+ rural food pantries. Our food boxes work to not only support hungry Appalachians but also help provide a source of income to our local farmers.
Now more than ever, it can be incredibly difficult to find work, especially for those in vulnerable positions. Sometimes that’s returning from incarceration, recovering from addiction, or coming back to work after many years of unemployment. ASD’s Groundwork program provides people with paid on-the-job training that builds skills and resumés that pave the way towards a long-term career.
As tobacco buyouts dried up, small farms in places like southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee struggled to stay afloat. ASD has worked to keep farmers on their land by connecting them to grocery stores, restaurants, and wholesale buyers.
Many veterans face hurdles in the transition back to civilian life after their service. ASD works to ensure local veterans are aware of all of the benefits and resources available to them. For those interested in agriculture, ASD provides tools, training, and resources to help get them started.
From helping farmers and food entrepreneurs thrive, to preparing individuals for meaningful careers, improving access to healthy food, and strengthening local economies we work by investing in people, businesses, and communities what will help benefit them and the Appalachian region, for generations to come.
We believe strong communities are built through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to making a difference.
For years we have worked alongside individuals, families, farmers, veterans, and community partners while all along remaining rooted in one simple belief: when people are empowered to succeed, communities become stronger, more resilient, and better prepared for the future. But, don’t just take it from us.
